6. Visit Onuma Park on the Outskirts of Hakodate to Go Back to Nature!
Onuma Quasi-National Park is a giant natural paradise, and a famous idyllic spot that boasts three beautiful lakes and encompasses Hokkaido Koma-ga-take (Horse Mountain) behind the lakes. A 30-minute ride by limited express can take you from Hakodate Station to the Park. Such a park is well worth a visit, which is definitely rewarding than a glimpse of its picturesque scenery from a passing express.
A Perfect Place Representative of Hokkaido for Nature Lovers and a Paradise for Animals ♡
In Onuma Quasi-National Park, there are three lakes, Onuma Lake, Konuma Lake and Junsai Swamp, dotted with over 100 islets. With picturesque and magnificent scenes, the Park is selected as one of the Three New Famous Spots in Japan. The natural scenery of Koma-ga-take and Onuma Lake is most beautiful. The lake water is as tranquil and pellucid as a mirror, and the mountain is as majestic and imposing as a hero. In fine days, you can see the enchanting reflections of whole Koma-ga-take in the lake♪
Besides mountains and lakes, the Park still appears like a virgin forest. With many birds and animals living there, it has different ambience in different seasons. ♡
A Treasure Trove of Outdoor Activities ♪
Onuma Park is also a treasure trove of outdoor activities! A variety of activities, such as leisurely strolls around lakes, riding, canoeing, cycling, camping and pleasure boat ride to islets, can be conducted there. Travel by canoe is most recommended, you can take photos of your choice, while you are rowing on Konuma Lake. ♪
Even in winter, there are many outdoor activities available. A thick layer of ice forms on the lakes, which offer the experience of “ice fishing for wakasagi (smelt)”. You can make a hole in the ice, reel in small fishes through the hole, have them deep-fried, and enjoy them. Snow-shoeing, skiing, snowmobile ride or off-road vehicle ride on snow are also available. You may choose any activity you like in a world of white!
You can derive great pleasure from merely a lakeside walk. When sauntering in the forest beside charming lakes and breathing fresh air, you might feel as if you are refreshing yourself. ♡
Savoring Choice Onuma Beef, a Specialty and Delicacy of Hakodate
A visitor to Onuma should not miss the chance to savor another specialty and delicacy of Hakodate, “Onuma beef”. The beef from the cattle that graze on Hokkaido’s luscious natural pastures is, of course, full-flavored!
After passing the ticket booth and walking along the road for around 10 minutes, you can get to Kogetsu Bridge and be greeted with Table De Rivage, an excellent lakeside restaurant, where you can savor choice Onuma beef, while you are enjoying the wonderful view of Onuma from inside the glazed restaurant.♪
