Nikko is home to many waterfalls, but its most famous waterfall is Kegon Falls. Here the water from Lake Chuzenji spills down a 97-meter-tall cliff, showcasing a beautiful and powerful force of nature. From the observation platform, which you can reach down at the waterfall basin by elevator, you can experience the roar of the falls and the splashing water from up close. In May the area is surrounded with beautiful fresh greenery, in June the Asian horse martin can be seen around the falls, and in the fall the color-changing autumn leaves are a breathtaking sight. Furthermore, in January and February you can see “blue ice,” a phenomenon of blue sparkling ice made when the 12 falls, smaller streams of water, freeze over.

Highlights

  • The most famous waterfall in Nikko.
  • Taking the elevator down to the waterfall basin will bring you to the observation platform.
  • You can see both Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji from the Akechidaira Observation Area.

  • When the glaciers melt in spring, the water volume increases and the waterfall becomes even more majestic.

  • It's really cool in the fall, and the negative ions from the waterfall feel so refreshing.

  • I recommend spending a little money to take the elevator down to the platform and see the waterfall up close. It's an amazing way to feel the power of nature.

One of Japan's three most famous waterfalls. You can take an elevator down for a closer look, but there's an extra fee. You can still see it from above, but it's not quite as impressive as being up close.

I was worried about rain before coming, but when I arrived, the sky was perfectly clear and everything looked so cheerful. I got really lucky! 😁
