Last update :

This historic temple, which was established in 940 by High Priest Kanchō, is rooted in prayers for the pacification of the Taira no Masakado revolt.
This Fudomyo statue was carved by Kukai, the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, who prayed as he created it.
When visitors step inside the Great Main Hall, they can pray to Fudomyo, too.
The Ichikawa family, a long line of kabuki performers, created a play in which Fudomyo makes an appearance. This play gathered the faithful of Naritasan among commoners during the early Edo Period.
Today, it has become a popular temple attracting over 3 million visitors during the first three days of the New Year.

  • Every New Year, this temple has the second highest number of visitors after Meiji Shrine. The main street is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants. It's definitely the most iconic temple in the Narita area.

  • There's a really retro old street on the way to Shinshoji Temple. The famous spot here is Kawatoyo's grilled eel—freshly grilled, fatty, and delicious, served with a clear soup made from eel innards. Super tasty!

Today I visited Naritasan Shinshoji Temple with friends. It takes over an hour by train to get there, but it’s totally worth it. This place is not only a popular spot for worship, but the huge park is also really beautiful and makes for a lovely walk. There are lots of restaurants along the approach selling grilled eel rice, and the smell of charcoal-grilled eel is everywhere. Eel rice has always been a favorite among visitors here and is a local specialty you shouldn't miss.

  • It's just a short walk from the station, coming down from the hill, and both sides are lined with charming local craft shops. Compared to temples in Tokyo and Kyoto, this place is really peaceful. The garden is beautiful and perfect for a stroll, with ponds and waterfalls adding a calming vibe.
