At the heart of Gunma Prefecture, Mt. Haruna looms north of Kanto Valley. It is called one of the three Jomo Mountains, which are major mountains in Gunma along with Mt. Akagi and Mt. Myogi. To the west, there is Ikaho Onsen. Their hot spring is thought to derive from Mt. Haruna’s volcanic activity. When Mt. Haruna erupted, When Mt. Haruna erupted, Lake Haruna was born (1100m above sea level). It is surrounded by the outer rim with Kamongadake, the highest peak, within which Haruna Fuji stands beautiful. From the Lake, Mt. Haruna Ropeway will take you to the top of the mountain where you can take in the grand view over Chichibu, Tanigawa and Akagi mountains.
To the southwest of the mountain, Haruna Shrine has been welcoming many visitors who wish for good luck and prosperity since the 6th century. It is now popular as a power spot for romance. Going through Zuishinmon Gate and up the approach, you will pass the national important cultural properties, Seven Deities of Good Luck statues, mountain aesthetics' holy place, Gyojakei Valley, a cedar tree which General Takeda Shingen shot an arrow to commemorate a victory in a battle, and then Soryumon Gate to reach the main hall. Behind the hall, stands the Misugata Rock which enshrines the deity.
