Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja Shrine

At the Base of Mount Fuji, a Historical Shrine Serving as a Hiking Trailhead.

Last update :

One of the cultural assets of the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site, this shrine has a history going back 1900 years. Said to be the shrine where legendary prince Yamato Takeru decided to worship Mount Fuji from afar, it is now the starting point for the Mount Fuji Yoshidaguchi hiking trail.

Take in the solemn atmosphere as you proceed along the Sando pathway to the shrine, lined with cedar trees and stone lanterns, until you reach Fuji-san Otorii, one of the largest wooden torii gates in Japan. Next to the Haiden, or main hall of worship, are the sacred trees, “Fuji Taro” cedar and “Fufu Hinoki” cypress. Feel the magnificence of nature from their powerful presence, standing for over 1000 years.

Every year on July 1st, the Mount Fuji climbing season opens with an official ceremony to pray for the safety of all climbers. The Fire Festival is held on August 26th and 27th to mark the end of the climbing season.

In autumn, enjoy the turning of the leaves. This shrine is especially beautiful in November, when the Haiden is enveloped in vivid colors.
