It is known that early blooming cherry blossoms, which begin to bloom in the beginning of February, along the Kawazu River. These cherry blossoms were discovered in Kawazu-cho in 1955 and are called "Kawazu Zakura" now. It is considered as a natural hybrid species between the winter cherry (Kanhizakura) group, which blooms starting from around January, mainly in warm regions, and the wild cherry (Oshima zakura) group, which is a wild species in Japan.
It has larger blossoms which features deep pink color, and it becomes in full bloom about a month because of the mild climate of Izu and the characteristics of early blooming. About 850 cherry trees bloom along the river alone, and about 8,000 Kawazu-zakura trees bloom in Kawazu-cho wide.
“Kawazu-zakura Cherry Blossoms Festival'” is held every year conforming with the blooming time and is crowded with many cherry blossom viewers. During the period, many stalls, lighting-up cherry blossoms, and various events are provided. In particular, "Night Cherry Blossom Lighting Up" is popular for its romantic atmosphere.
