"The Miyagawa Morning Market is held along the Miyagawa River from Kaji-bashi Bridge to Yayoi-bashi Bridge, near the “Furuimachinami”(old townscape) of Hida Takayama. This morning market has a long history, dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868). It is said to be one of the three major morning markets in Japan, the Wajima Morning Market in Ishikawa Prefecture, and the Katsuura Morning Market in Chiba Prefecture.
The number of stalls varies depending on the weather, but the morning market is basically held every day of the year.
At most, there are 30 to 40 street stalls with white tents lined up along the 350-meter long street and local producers and their families sell freshly harvested seasonal vegetables, fruits, flowers, and processed products such as pickles and rice cakes, as well as handmade folk crafts and handicrafts.
One of the pleasures of shopping is chatting with the shop staff who speak friendly and straightforward "Takayama dialect." Enjoy the warmth of face-to-face interaction as you shop, meet smiling faces, and learn about rare vegetables' tastes and cooking methods.
Recently, there have been an increasing number of takeout gourmet stores where you can enjoy coffee, sweets, and skewers on the spot, so you may decide to enjoy your breakfast here.
