The Sagano Kanko Railway's trolley trains operate on a revived part of the former San'in Main Line, which was closed down. Classical Art Deco style coaches coupled to a diesel locomotive travel 7.3 km one way from Torokko Saga Station, adjacent to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, to Torokko Kameoka Station, taking about 25 minutes.
The train runs along the Hozu River, weaving its way through the valley, and from the train windows, passengers can enjoy the magnificent nature of the Hozu River and the beauty of the valley. The dynamic beauty of the valley is breathtaking as it changes from season to season: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and sometimes snow in winter. The train slows down in areas where the scenery is particularly scenic, allowing passengers to enjoy the view from the train windows at a leisurely pace.
The train consists of a diesel locomotive and five trolley cars, and the most popular car is No. 5, the "Rich". It has a glass ceiling and vaulted sides, allowing passengers to feel the wind and the murmuring of the valley on their skin.
All trains have reserved seats, and advance tickets can be reserved one month before boarding. It is better to make reservations early, as they fill up quickly during the cherry blossom and fall foliage seasons. During the season of autumn foliage, the leaves are lit up in the evening from around 4:30 p.m., providing a fantastic view that is different from that during the daytime.
