Hozu River starts from Tanba Plateau. A small boat with a flat bottom will go down the River for 16km from Kameoka to Saga Arashiyama in two hours. Experienced three boatmen steer the vessel through the rocky gorge. A truly dynamic boat tour on the current.
This waterway was originally opened to carry Tanba’s products such as lumber and coal to Kyoto during the early Edo Period. Along the course, there are some points where the wild current makes big splashes. Where the river is calm, the boatmen talk about the history of Hozu River and good sites to note while you enjoy the mountains, curious rock formation, and rich nature. You will go under the JR Sanin Line Bridge and run along a tram that connects Kameoka and Arashiyama. A two-hour boat tour offers a variety of things to see, and you will never get bored.
Besides viewing cherry blossoms, fresh green and fall colors in Hozu Gorge down the river, the boat runs in winter offering extraordinary beauty. Regular boating (March 10 - December 12) is available on the day of riding. A group of more than 10 passengers can make a reservation. In winter (December 13 - March 9), one person can make a reservation.
