Shimabara City has long been blessed with an abundance of spring water, earning it the title of "City of Water". Particularly in the Shinmachi district, the residents are known for their lives closely intertwined with the spring water. Strolling through the town, one encounters canals filled with koi fish swimming about at almost every turn.

Located in such an area is the "Spring Water Garden, Shimeiso", a sprawling garden covering more than 187 'tsubo' (a traditional Japanese unit of area). Established during the Meiji era, it was named for its exquisite views in all directions. Within the garden, several ponds of varying sizes are filled with about 3,000 tons of spring water daily. These ponds, so clear you can see to the bottom, are inhabited by koi fish. The surroundings are adorned with red pines and maple trees, crafting a breathtaking view that leaves visitors in awe.

The traditional wooden house with a tiled roof appears as though it's floating on one of the ponds. There's an opportunity to sit on the engawa (veranda) of this house that extends over the pond. At this nationally registered tangible cultural property, savor a moment of refined elegance.
