Inuyama Festival has been handed down at Haritsuna Shrine since 1635. 13 floats equipped with trick dolls are carried through the town showing off their trick dolls. This Inuyama Festival’s float event is designated as a national important intangible folk cultural property.
The highlight of the festival, held on the 1st Saturday and Sunday of every April, is the gorgeous three-layer floats. All 13 of them are designated as Aichi’s tangible folk cultural properties. The trick dolls that move for the piccolos and drums are a must-see. Donden, where men will hoist the 3-ton float and suddenly change direction, is amazing to watch!
During the day, the blooming cherries in the castle town and the floats are like a master painting. At night, each float is lit with 365 lanterns with a dreamy effect.
In 2016, 33 float events in Japan, including the Inuyama Festival, were registered as UNESCO intangible heritage.
