HOTARUIKA MUSEUM
Learn about “Hotaruika” a firefly squid, which is said to be the mystery of Toyama Bay, by seeing and touching.
This hands-on museum is co-established at the Road Station "Wave Park Namerikawa", which is located alongside Japan's most prominent firefly squid fishing coast of Namerikawa. At the museum, you can enjoy learning about the ecology of firefly squid and the mystery of their inhabiting Toyama Bay. It provides a spectator-integrated live theater for a firefly squid luminous light show, and also a "Sea of Deep Sea Wonders” where you can learn about the sea creatures that live in the deep sea.
The firefly squid luminous show can be seen from mid-March to late May. It's a popular spring-only show where fire squid is prominent, and you can see live firefly squid glowing up close. During the rest of the year, a show of light emitting plankton is held. In the theater, you can watch firefly squid fishing and maritime sightseeing throughout the year.
In addition, "Hotaruika Maritime Tourism'' is held only from April to early May. In this popular tour, you can observe the mystically twinkling firefly squid and fishermen fishing with fixed nets from sightseeing boats. The boat departs from the harbor in front of the Hotaruika Museum before dawn.
