The festival is said to have begun in 1703 to pray for good harvest. Since then, residents in Kishiwada have kept the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival for almost 300 years. Each town around the Kishiwada Castle has a float called Danjiri to pull.
The highlight is Yarimawashi - About 500 residents pull the 4-ton Danjiri and turn around a corner in 90 degrees without slowing down. Daikugata on top of Danjiri directs the turn as people move the float sharply. It is something to watch!
At night, almost 200 lanterns are put on Danjiri from 7 - 10pm. It is beautiful in a different way from the day time.
If you look carefully, Danjiri has carvings of historical people, horses and beasts all over. Look at different carvings on each Danjiri from different towns.
The whole town gets in fever during the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival. The valiant procession captures your attention, but watch out for accidents around the corner where Yarimawashi takes place. Along the road where Danjiri is pulled, the festival staff guide watchers. Follow their directions.
