Alongside Asahikawa ramen, Shio Hormone is famous as a B-grade gourmet food. The style of seasoning pork offal with salt and pepper is known to have originated in Asahikawa. Among them, "Sumiya," which opened in 1986, is a nationally renowned specialty store for Shio Hormone.
At Sumiya, the offal is meticulously cleaned during preparation to minimize any peculiar smell, making it palatable even for those who are usually hesitant about hormone dishes. For first-time visitors or those unsure of what to order, a mixed platter is recommended.
The typical Shio Hormone dish here, featuring stomach and tripe, is incredibly affordable at 360 yen per plate, endearing it to many. Now, apart from Asahikawa, it has expanded to five stores in total, including in Sapporo and Saitama, attracting tourists who fell in love with the taste in Asahikawa and locals visiting nearby branches.
