Founded in 1956, Kikuyo Shokudo Main Store started as a small establishment with about ten seats but has now expanded to accommodate thirty seats. In response to its popularity, the diner has grown to include several locations: a branch a short 30-second walk from the main store, a Bay Area store, and a New Chitose Airport store, serving locals and travelers alike with dishes made from fresh ingredients sourced in Hakodate.
Kikuyo Shokudo's signature feature is its rice cooked in a charcoal-fired steaming kamado. Initially, such kamado were common in sushi restaurants, but soon became rare as suppliers dwindled. Kikuyo Shokudo then developed its own original kamado using diatomaceous earth to continue serving its proud rice dishes.
The menu centers on seafood bowls, complemented by set meals, sashimi, and grilled dishes. The most popular seafood bowl is the "Ganso Hakodate Tomoe-don." This dish, a feast for both the eyes and palate, features a lavish arrangement of locally sourced fresh sea urchin, salmon roe, and scallops.
