Ikura Cave
A gigantic stalactite cave on a sheer cliff, woven with mystical and breathtaking sights of peculiar rocks and waterfalls.
The Ikura Cave in Niimi City, boasting one of the largest scales among the approximately 200 stalactite caves scattered throughout the area, is a natural marvel of Okayama Prefecture. This gigantic cave, a designated natural monument, extends 1,200 meters in length with a vertical range of 90 meters. Set in a daunting 240-meter-high cliff along the Takahashi River, the cave's entrance leads to a mystical world shaped over billions of years.
Inside, about 30 uniquely named rock formations and wonders, such as "Silver Sudare," "Mizu-goromo," and "Kurage-iwa," are scattered throughout. The cave also features impressive stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the ground like bamboo shoots.
There are three waterfalls inside the cave, with the 50-meter-high "Chijiku no Taki" being particularly spectacular. The powerful waterfall, thundering down with a roaring sound, is a testament to nature's grandeur. Near the exit, you'll find "Ariso no Miya," known as a deity of matchmaking.
Make sure to visit the local dining area serving Niimi's famous "Chiya Beef" and the shop offering local sake and signature sweets.
