Sunpiazza Aquarium

This urban aquarium is adjacent to the large shopping center "Sunpiazza" and close to JR and subway stations. Although the facility is compact, the exhibits are spectacular, with 10,000 living creatures of about 200 species being kept in an ingeniously designed exhibition space.

The exhibition space has two floors, with the first floor displaying fish from Hokkaido's oceans, saltwater fish from coral reefs, crustaceans, and more. There is also a "touching pool" where visitors can feed the approximately 1,500 fish in the tank (held on Sundays and holidays) and touch starfish and crabs.

On the second floor are exhibits of fish of unusual colors and shapes, a tank where you can see how a lantern eel generates electric power, and penguins, seals, and other creatures that live near the water. The penguin and otter exhibits are especially popular, as visitors can see their adorable behavior up close. Feeding times for the spotted seal, Asian small-clawed otter, and cape penguins are open to the public, and visitors can watch them eat.
