The Funadama Shrine, which stands guard over "Tomoe Port" from the foot of Mount Hakodate, is said to be the oldest shrine in Hokkaido. The shrine enshrines the god of tidal currents and the god of the sea, and is said to be beneficial to maritime navigation and road traffic. Because of the shrine's significance as a place of safety on sea routes, it is also visited by students preparing for entrance examinations and job hunting who are deciding their life paths.

The Tsugaru Straits, which Hakodate faces, have long been the scene of many maritime accidents due to the rough currents. Legend has it that the famous medieval warlord “Minamoto no Yoshitsune” was nearly lost on a voyage, but was able to land safely in Hakodate thanks to the blessings of the deity Funatama Myojin. Legend has it that a child god appeared to “Minamoto no Yoshitsune”, who was thirsty and looking for water after landing, and when he looked in the direction he was pointing, he saw clear water gushing out of the rock.

At the shrine office, a "rudder charm" with a picture of a ship's rudder woven into it is awarded, and is popular among people involved in the fishing and shipping industries, students preparing for entrance exams, and young people looking for work.
