Sakurajima Bussankan
A large roadside stop packed with the best of Kagoshima, perfect for shopping, dining, and sightseeing during a drive.
Sakurajima Bussankan is one of the largest roadside stops in the Sakurajima area, located on Kagoshima’s iconic volcano, which still sends dramatic plumes of smoke into the sky. The facility features an observation restaurant that can seat up to 500 guests, a large souvenir shop filled with local specialties, and an observation deck offering sweeping views of majestic Sakurajima.
On the first floor, the shop is lined with classic Kagoshima souvenirs such as satsuma-age fish cakes and sweets made from local sweet potatoes. You’ll also find an extensive shochu corner featuring well-known brands, Yakusugi cedar crafts, and unique items made using Sakurajima volcanic ash and lava-an impressively diverse selection. The second-floor observation restaurant allows diners to enjoy their meal while looking out over Sakurajima and the calm waters of Kinko Bay. Signature dishes include tonkotsu-ni, pork simmered for three days with shochu, brown sugar, and barley miso, as well as popular menu items like Magma Curry and the Satsuma set meal, both topped with generous portions of this specialty.
At the observation deck, visitors can take in spectacular close-up views of Sakurajima and snap photos with monuments such as the giant Sakurajima daikon radish sculpture and stone poems honoring Meiji Restoration figures. Many travelers stop here to capture memorable photos as a highlight of their Sakurajima trip.
