English House (Kobe)

Located in Kobe’s Kitano Ijinkan district-an area where Western-style residences were built by foreign settlers who moved from the former settlement area after the Port of Kobe opened-the English House is a colonial-style manor that still retains its original 1909 appearance.

Inside, the rooms are decorated with fabrics by William Morris, known as the father of modern design, and furnished with luxurious antiques and furnishings from the 17th to 19th centuries. The highlight is the faithful recreation of Sherlock Holmes’ study at “221B Baker Street,” where visitors can wander through the house wearing Holmes’ signature cape and hat.

The English garden, where seasonal flowers bloom throughout the year, is another must-see. It features a 100-year-old ginkgo tree known as the “Tree of Confession,” named for its shape that resembles two lovers embracing. The grounds also include a bronze statue commemorating Holmes’ 160th birthday and a replica of Baker Street Station-making it a treasure trove of photo spots.
