Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art

The Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art focuses on modern and contemporary art from the Meiji era onward. Its collection of over 10,000 works centers on artists with ties to Wakayama Prefecture, including sculptor Ryumon Yasuda from Kinokawa, Western-style painter Kigai Kawaguchi, known for his abstract works, and the celebrated “maverick” of Japanese painting, Ryushi Kawabata. Among the highlights are 13 oil paintings by Yuzo Saeki, a renowned Western-style painter active from the Taisho to early Showa periods. The museum also boasts a rich print collection that allows visitors to trace the evolution of printmaking in modern art.

The museum’s impressive holdings are showcased through both its permanent and special exhibitions. These exhibitions not only feature modern and contemporary Japanese art but also include works by international artists and emerging talents active in the art world today.

The building itself, designed by prominent architect Kisho Kurokawa, is an architectural masterpiece. Its design integrates elements of Japanese tradition-such as the grand stone lanterns at the entrance and the distinctive eaves-with modern architectural aesthetics. The museum grounds also include a walking path inspired by the Kumano Kodo, offering visitors a serene and reflective environment to complement their art experience.
