Fukuchiin
A temple lodging in Koyasan, renowned as the only one with a natural hot spring.
Founded in 816 by the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi (Kūkai), Mount Koya has been a sacred site for over 1,200 years. Among its many temples, Fukuchiin boasts an 800-year history and is renowned as the only temple lodging on Mount Koya with a natural hot spring. Its principal deity is Aizen Myoo, believed to grant blessings of marital harmony and the fulfillment of wishes.
Guests can enjoy the natural hot spring baths at any time during their stay, with separate bathing areas for men and women. The open-air baths are also available between 3:00pm and 8:00pm. Morning services begin at 6:00am and are generally open to voluntary participation. The temple is also praised for its shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), which highlights local seasonal vegetables along with Mount Koya specialties such as koya-dofu (freeze-dried tofu) and Kinzanji wasabi.
Another highlight is the trio of gardens designed by Mirei Shigemori, a celebrated Showa-era landscape architect. Each garden has its own distinctive character, blending bold stone arrangements with lush green moss to create striking modern compositions. The temple also houses historical treasures, including artifacts from feudal lords such as Ii Naosuke-known for his role in the Sakuradamon Incident-as well as rare antiques dating back to the Nara period.
