Shiobara Onsen

Located in northern Tochigi Prefecture, Shiobara Onsen is a historic hot spring area with a history of more than 1,200 years. Eleven hot spring sources stretch along the Houki River gorge, giving the area the nickname “Shiobara Eleven Springs.” With around 150 springs bubbling up in a single region, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of water types and mineral properties.

About 50 inns are scattered throughout the hot spring town, each offering its own charm-whether it’s the baths, cuisine, or location. Many feature free-flowing hot spring water straight from the source, allowing for a deeply relaxing soak. There are also plenty of casual spots where you can enjoy a bath without staying overnight, including public baths, day-use facilities with restaurants and rest areas, and foot baths. Many inns also offer day-trip plans, so be sure to look into those as well.

The surrounding gorge features seven suspension bridges-most famously the Lovers’ Sanctuary Momiji Valley Suspension Bridge-as well as ten scenic waterfalls such as Raitei Falls, making the area ideal for leisurely exploration. Visitors can also enjoy beautiful seasonal scenery, particularly the vibrant autumn foliage.

Shiobara Onsen is also known as a retreat beloved by many literary masters. Monuments honoring figures such as Ozaki Kōyō and Natsume Sōseki can be found around the area.
