Ryuzu no chaya
While taking in views of the famous waterfall, enjoy a satisfying meal and a bit of shopping.
A teahouse where you can enjoy both a meal and shopping while gazing at one of Oku-Nikko’s three famous waterfalls, Ryuzu no Taki (Dragon Head Falls).
The teahouse is mentioned as “Jigoku Chaya” in the Edo-period travel chronicle Nikkō Sanshi, and has long been loved as a resting place for travelers.
Its signature dish is ozōni, featuring springy mochi fried and simmered in a rich dashi broth. Other popular handmade items include yuba karaage (fried tofu skin rolls) and Yashio pork rice bowl, made with Tochigi’s premium brand pork. For something sweet, try the Semui dango, said to bring peace to those who eat it, or one of nine flavors of soft serve ice cream.
On the left side of the teahouse is the Coffee Stand Ryojōan, where you can enjoy aromatic coffee brewed with the clear waters of the nearby Jigokusawa stream, or matcha served with the shop’s signature Higurashi mochi, all available for takeout.
The gift shop sells local specialties like Higurashi mochi as well as original souvenirs such as straps and magnets to commemorate your visit.
