Arita Ceramics Fair
For seven bustling days, the pottery village of Arita comes alive.
This annual event, held during Golden Week in the birthplace of Arita-yaki pottery with over 400 years of history, originated in 1896 when local pottery shops began selling surplus and non-standard items in what was called "Kurazarai Sales". Since then, it has become a fixture in Arita, celebrating its 120th edition in 2024.
Throughout the fair, various pottery shops line the main street, including Saramachi Street, and spread across the entire town, creating a lively atmosphere. From spring novelties to high-priced luxury items and creatively unique pieces by young artists, a wide variety of porcelain products are showcased, transforming the usually quiet pottery village into a vibrant hub.
Each shopping district hosts special events and time-limited sales. Nearby cafes and restaurants also set up stalls, allowing visitors to enjoy both shopping and gastronomic delights. Concurrently, the "Web Arita Ceramics Fair" started in 2020, providing an opportunity for people from distant locations or those staying at home to participate.
