ONO Memorial

A hilltop museum with ocean views showcasing works by a master of junk art.

Supervised by :  ONO Memorial

Tadahiro Ono is a contemporary artist who created many junk art (found-object art) works and earned high acclaim worldwide. You can learn about his legacy and see his works at a museum in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, where he spent most of his life.

The museum sits on a small hill overlooking Mikuni Port. It reuses a former warehouse that once stood downtown and was relocated and renovated, along with Ono’s former home and studio, which he used until his death in 2001. A new gallery called “BLUE CAKE” was also added. Its charming exterior features cobalt-blue tiles—said to have been Ono’s favorite color—covering the entire surface, with pink-gold window frames. Plenty of natural light pours in through large windows, creating a bright, open space where you can enjoy artworks made from scrap materials.

Admission is free. Open only Fridays–Sundays and public holidays from March to November, and closed for the winter from December to February.
