Toyama Castle Ruins Park

A historical destination featuring rare castle ruins, a Japanese garden, and a museum.

Last update :

Nicknamed the "Floating Castle" for its appearance of floating on water, Toyama Castle Ruins Park is built on the historic site of Toyama Castle, once the residence of feudal lords who ruled the present-day Toyama region. The park retains portions of the original stone walls, moat, and the impressive Chitose Gate, preserving the grandeur of the past. With its beautiful Japanese stroll garden and historical significance, the park is a beloved historical destination in the prefecture. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom across the grounds, making it an ideal spot for hanami (flower viewing) alongside the cherry-lined Matsukawa River.

Spanning 7.06 hectares, the park offers a variety of must-visit spots, especially its two notable museums:

The Toyama Municipal Folk Museum presents the 400-year history of the castle, from its construction to the Meiji period, with special exhibitions held several times a year, focusing on Toyama's rich cultural heritage.

Another highlight is the Sato Memorial Art Museum, founded by renowned Toyama-born businessman and tea master Sukekuro Sato. This museum displays over 1,000 pieces of Eastern classical art and includes two tea rooms and a cypress-built tatami room relocated from the Sato family home. Visitors can immerse themselves in the essence of wabi-sabi, experiencing the depth of Japan’s tea culture.
