Founded over 1,250 years ago by the Chinese monk Iko, this historic temple enshrines the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva, a secret Buddha designated as an Important Cultural Property. Many people know this spot as the famed second temple on the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.

Situated halfway up Mount Nagusa, the temple’s main hall awaits perched above 231 steps that start at the mountain’s base gate. From this vantage point, visitors are treated to one of Wakayama Prefecture’s most breathtaking views, overlooking the Japan Heritage-listed Wakanoura Bay. The awe-inspiring scenery is sure to leave a lasting impression. In 2022, a barrier-free cable car was introduced, allowing for easy access without climbing the stairs.

In addition to its captivating coastal vistas, Kimiidera Temple is famed for its seasonal floral beauty. Spring is a highlight, with around 400 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, blooming in full glory. The autumn weeks beginning in late October bring the temple grounds into a time of vibrant foliage. Swing by during these seasons to catch the brilliant colors surrounding the temple’s sacred structures, such as the Tahoto pagoda and the belfry, enhancing its enchanting atmosphere.
