Himakajima Island
An easy-to-reach island getaway for octopus and fugu cuisine.
A small remote island floating in Mikawa Bay, with a circumference of approx. 5.5 km. You can get there in around 20 minutes by high-speed ferry from Kowa Port, and it’s also easy to access from Nagoya. There are two ports, West Port and East Port, and many inns and shops are concentrated around West Port.
An island where fishing, including octopus fishing, is a key industry. You can spot octopus-themed designs not only on the iconic octopus monument, but also in unexpected places like manhole covers and the local police box.
Inns and guesthouses known for their cooking are scattered across the island, so there’s plenty to eat. Whole boiled octopus is a signature local specialty, with an irresistible springy bite. From October to March, you can also enjoy fugu dishes. Many lodgings offer day-trip plans (reservation required), so you can savor fresh seafood without staying overnight.
It’s also recommended to take your time and enjoy activities like swimming and fishing. Some shops also rent fishing gear. On the east side of the island, you’ll find the “Lovers’ Swing,” where you can enjoy an exhilarating, photo-worthy view that feels like you’re soaring out toward the sea.
