Wakkanai Station is the famed, northernmost railway station in Japan, located on the JR Soya Main Line. It sits just a 20-minute drive up from Wakkanai Airport, a 2-minute drive from the ferry terminal, and a 40-minute drive to Cape Soya, Japan's northernmost point. Swing by here for a smattering of different sightseeing delights, a bus terminal just off the front doorstep for routes to get you going, intercity buses to Sapporo, and regular sightseeing buses. For an added perk, check out Roadside Station Wakkanai just next door, the northernmost roadside station in Japan.

Step onto the station platform to find a signpost that’s on the dot as Japan's northernmost station, and from the ticket gates, you can see a sign marking the "northernmost railway track" behind the track stopper. In front of the station, there's a monument with tracks and a stopper that were once in use, making it a popular photo spot.

The station is directly connected to Kitakara, a retail multiplex for local specialties, cafes, restaurants, a cinema complex, and a convenience store. There’s even a tourist information corner and office onsite making it a handy stop for anything, even outside of hopping on the train.
