Last update :

This historic temple seated in Gero Onsen keeps a tradition of 350 long years from its spot first established in 1671. The temple sits perched on the hillside of Nakane Mountain, also known as "Gero Fuji”, giftings visitors with panoramic views of the Hida mountain range and the hot spring town from its grounds, accessible by climbing 173 steps.

The temple enshrines Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, who, according to legend, took the form of a white heron to guide villagers to a new hot spring source after the original Gero Onsen dried up in the Kamakura period. In front of the main hall you’ll find a statue of Yuyakushi Nyorai, from which the sacred waters of Gero Onsen flow. The temple also houses precious artifacts, including the "Yumon," which chronicles the history of Gero Onsen, and Buddha statues carved by the Edo-period monk Enku.

The temple and its surroundings are famous for their vibrant autumn foliage, with about 80 maple trees turning colors. Swing by during peak season in mid-November to find the temple grounds illuminated at night for a scene that feels like pure magic. To warm up, visitors can enjoy the hot spring footbaths scattered throughout the town or the "Momiji Footbath," which appears at the temple only during this period.
