Furano Hokkai Heso Matsuri

A quintessential summer event in Hokkaido, held annually on July 28th and 29th in Furano City, this festival celebrates Furano's location at the geographical center of Hokkaido, earning it the nickname "Heso of Hokkaido" (or the “navel” of Hokkaido in Japanese).

The hands-down highlight of this special event is the Hokkai Heso Odori Dance Competition, where dancers paint faces on their bellies and cover their heads and arms with large hats, dancing through the streets in a lively parade. This joyful event welcomes impromptu participants, drawing visitors from across Japan and around the world.

The festival also features a charming “Children's Heso Dance”, heartwarming performances by local Furano residents on stage, including dance and music acts. Other attractions include the "Baby Crawling Race”, the "Heso Singing Contest”, and an evening "Beer Party”. The "Heso Specialty Market" offers local delicacies and Furano's unique gourmet treats, making it a delight for food enthusiasts.
