Inunakiyama Onsen
Full seclusion at this hidden hot spring retreat and village near Osaka.
Inunakiyama, known as the oldest Shugendo site in Japan, was established approximately 1,300 years ago. The name originates from a legend where a dog saved its master's life by warning him of a giant serpent. Recently, the area has gained popularity as a spiritual power spot. Despite its mystical atmosphere, with untouched nature, it is conveniently located less than an hour's drive from Osaka city and about 30 minutes from Kansai International Airport.
At the foot of the mountain lies a hot spring village along the Inunaki River, where you can enjoy the feeling of a hidden retreat while gazing at the natural scenery that changes with the seasons, such as fresh greenery and autumn foliage. The village features a variety of unique inns, each offering its own charm—whether it's a large bathhouse facing a Japanese garden, an open-air bath overlooking the national park forest, or dishes featuring local ingredients like wild game and fresh seafood from Sano Port. Many of these facilities also offer day-use bathing options, making them a popular choice for short trips.
Inunakiyama Shipporyuji Temple, the head temple of the Shingon sect's Inunaki school, continues to attract practitioners from all over Japan. The temple also offers training experiences, including waterfall meditation, for the general public (advance reservation required). The surrounding mountains are equipped with hiking trails, and the area is also well-suited for barbecuing and river activities.
