Lake Akaya in Gunma Prefecture is a beautiful reservoir lake created by the construction of Aimata Dam. In spring, cherry blossoms along the lakeshore welcome visitors, and in fall, vivid autumn leaves reflect on the lake’s surface. In summer, lush green mountains surround the lake, and in winter, snow-covered mountains encircle it. Its seasonal scenery is a major draw, making it a relaxing place to take in the beauty of nature.

At Lake Akaya, you can also enjoy SUP, canoeing, and fishing for a more active visit. Parks and campgrounds are set up along the shore, making it easy to enjoy a laid-back outdoor experience. There are also walking paths, so you can choose to go for a walk or jog surrounded by expansive nature.

The “Lake Akaya Koinobori” event, held from late April to late May, is a must-see. The sight of colorful carp streamers swimming above the lake is a Lake Akaya–only spectacle where Japanese tradition meets nature. Koinobori are traditional decorations displayed for Japan’s Children’s Day (Tango no Sekku). Their grand presence is sure to become an unforgettable memory of your trip to Japan.
