Museum of Modern Art, Gunma
A museum nestled in the forest, showcasing domestic and international art pieces with a focus on modern and contemporary works.
Opened in October 1974, this museum is situated within IDA Forest of Gunma, a sprawling 260,000㎡ area covered with about 5,000 trees. Adjacent to the Gunma Prefectural Museum of History, it offers visitors the opportunity for a full museum tour experience.
The museum's collection comprises approximately 2,100 works, including modern masterpieces by Renoir, Monet, and Picasso, as well as Japanese modern and contemporary art and works by artists connected to Gunma Prefecture. It also houses the "Togataan Inoue Collection," which focuses on ancient Japanese and Chinese art. In addition to its collection exhibitions, the museum hosts four thematic special exhibitions annually. Among its most notable pieces is a nearly life-size tapestry reproduction of Picasso's masterpiece "Guernica", one of only three in the world, which is displayed just once a year.
The museum regularly organizes events such as lectures by guest speakers, artwork explanations by curators, and art tours designed for children.
The building was designed by the renowned architect Arata Isozaki, known for his geometric designs. Its structure, composed of square elements with marble walls and floors and a glass façade, remains timeless, even 50 years after its opening.
