It’s mainly preserved railway facilities and old train cars, so it has a nostalgic vibe. It’s pretty good for photos, and if you’re into trains or vintage stuff, it definitely has a certain charm.
That said, the whole place isn’t very big. If you really take your time, you’ll probably be done in about 10+ minutes, so there’s no need to plan on waiting in line for a long time.

Nagahama Railway Square
Time-travel at Japan’s oldest station building! Get hands-on with railways and learn.
Nagahama Railway Square in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, is an irresistible spot for train fans. Across three buildings, valuable materials and vehicles that tell the story of Nagahama’s railway history are on display, including Japan’s oldest surviving wooden station building, the former Nagahama Station. With plenty of hands-on exhibits, both train fans and non-fans can enjoy a fun time together.
Built in 1882, the Western-style wooden former Nagahama Station has kept its original exterior, and its stationmaster’s office and waiting room still preserve the feel of the era. Step inside and it feels like you’ve traveled back in time.
At the Nagahama Railway Culture Museum, you’ll find extensive exhibits of materials on Japan’s first railway ferry service, along with model trains. Highlights range from the history of how railways came to Nagahama to an HO-scale reproduction of Nagahama Station.
At the Hokuriku Line Electrification Memorial Museum, the D51 steam locomotive (nicknamed “Degoichi”) and the ED70 AC electric locomotive—both of which once ran on the Hokuriku Main Line—are displayed side by side, and you can sit in the cab of each one for a commemorative photo.
