Saiko Koori Festival

A natural art festival where ice sculptures stand proudly with majestic Mt. Fuji as the backdrop of winter.

Last update :

The Saiko Koori Festival is a celebration of ice art held annually from early to mid-February at Saiko Wild Bird Forest Park, nestled on the shores of Saiko, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. With its origins dating back roughly 30 years, the festival showcases magnificent ice sculptures set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mt. Fuji, blanketed in winter snow and framed by the crisp, clear air.

The process of crafting these icy masterpieces begins in late November. Using a variety of forms inspired by Mount Fuji and other motifs, water is sprayed over the structures and left to freeze overnight in the frigid temperatures, gradually forming towering ice sculptures, some exceeding 5 meters in height. By day, visitors can marvel at the intricate details of the sculptures, and by night, the festival transforms into an enchanting scene as the ice is illuminated, creating a mystical ambiance.

February temperatures in the Fuji Five Lakes area are cold, with average highs around 6°C (43°F) and lows dipping to -6°C (21°F). Visitors should dress warmly to fully enjoy the experience. On weekends and holidays, the festival also hosts food trucks, offering hot and tasty treats to complement the frosty spectacle.
