Lake Ikeda

A breathtaking view of Kyushu’s largest lake, where the majestic “Satsuma Fuji” (Mount Kaimon) harmonizes with vibrant seasonal flowers.

Last update :

Located in the southeastern part of the Satsuma Peninsula, Lake Ikeda is the largest lake in Kyushu, boasting a circumference of 15 km and a depth of 233 meters. Formed over 5,000 years ago through volcanic activity, it took shape after six major eruptions in the surrounding area, eventually becoming the caldera lake it is today.

One of the lake’s iconic views is the striking silhouette of Mt. Kaimon—also affectionately known as “Satsuma Fuji”—rising beyond the water. Along the lakeshore, vibrant flowerbeds bloom with different varieties each season: poppies and California poppies in spring, sunflowers in summer, cosmos and marigolds in autumn, and rapeseed flowers in winter—offering a colorful landscape all year round.

The lake also offers a variety of activities, including beginner-friendly kayaking lessons with instructors and exhilarating jet boat rides. In 2022, the lakeside tourism facility “IKEDAKO PAX” opened, featuring a stylish café serving coffee, sweets, and light meals. Popular scenic spots include the waterside deck and a grassy plaza, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views.
