Obihiro Shrine
“Snow fairy” birds alight here at eastern Hokkaido’s leading shrine.
Founded in 1910, Obihiro Shrine is one of the seven designated Bekkaku Shrines in Hokkaido. It enshrines the three deities of development: Okunitama no Kami, Onamuchi no Kami, and Sukunahikona no Kami. Onamuchi no Kami, also known as Okuninushi no Kami of Izumo Taisha, is revered for blessings in agriculture, commerce, medicine, and martial arts, as well as fostering strong relationships.
The shrine’s lush grounds were designated as a Hokkaido Environmental Green Space Protection Area in 1974. Home to grand trees like Harunire (Japanese Elm), walnut, and Katsura, the area also shelters abundant wildlife, including the beloved Shimaenaga (Hokkaido long-tailed tit), Ezo squirrels, and Ezo flying squirrels.
A highlight for visitors is the shrine’s unique Shimaenaga Omikuji, featuring the adorable "snow fairy" bird found only in Hokkaido. Other popular items include the Shimaenaga-themed goshuincho (stamp book) and ema (wooden prayer plaques), as well as the playful "Salmon Omikuji," which involves fishing for fortunes with a rod. The shrine’s stunning hanachōzu (flower-adorned purification basins), showcased six times a year, were ranked the 6th most beautiful in Japan.
Obihiro Shrine also gained recognition as the model for the "Great Ezo Shrine" in the manga Silver Spoon (Gin no Saji).
