Beppu Tower
A landmark in Beppu known for its panoramic observation deck and vibrant, colorful light displays.
Completed in 1957, Beppu Tower is a symbolic landmark of Beppu that stands as a registered National Tangible Cultural Property. The tower is designed by famed architect Tachu Naito, the same name behind sites like Tokyo Tower and Tsutenkaku, listed today as one of the "Six Tower Brothers" of Japan.
The tower underwent a major renovation in 2023. Repainted in its original gray color to reflect its construction era, the tower now stands at its original height of 100 meters with an extended lightning rod. The observation decks on the 16th and 17th floors offer sweeping 360° panoramic views of Beppu City and Beppu Bay from 55 meters above ground. A newly added 5th-floor "Kitahama Deck" allows visitors to admire the tower from below—complete with a “Bell of Happiness” and glowing tables at night, making it a favorite for couples.
At night, the tower is illuminated with vibrant lights that change with the seasons. Special lighting themes like rainbow and pastel are featured during events. Recognized by the Japan Night View Heritage organization, Beppu Tower is officially designated as a [Category III: Illuminated Night View Heritage] site.
