Oyunuma River Natural Footbath

Located in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido, this unique footbath lets you soak your feet in a naturally flowing hot spring river surrounded by beautiful wilderness. The water originates from Oyunuma, a crater lake formed by the eruption of Mt. Hiyoriyama, and flows downstream, turning the entire river into a natural hot spring.

Wooden benches are set up along the riverbank for a relaxing soak, and the milky-white water carries the distinct scent of sulfur—a hallmark of volcanic hot springs. The temperature varies depending on the spot, so you can find the perfect warmth to your liking.

Seasonal scenery adds to the experience: lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and serene snowy landscapes in winter—all while enjoying authentic hot spring waters.

Oyunuma River is about a 45-minute walk from Noboribetsu’s iconic Jigokudani (Hell Valley), along a scenic trail (note: the trail may be closed during winter). The dramatic geothermal landscape of Jigokudani, with its rising steam and volcanic terrain, makes it the perfect addition to your visit.
