Opened in 2007 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Beppu University, the Oita Fragrance Museum is a rare and fascinating institution dedicated to the theme of “fragrance” and its deep connection with humanity throughout history.

On the first floor, the “Fragrance Product Gallery” showcases an impressive collection of perfumes from around the world and across the ages. The sheer variety on display is truly stunning. The second floor houses the “Fragrance History Gallery,” which traces the evolution of fragrance from the birth of civilization to the present day, categorized by era and region. Perfume bottles from the Rococo and Art Nouveau periods are displayed alongside period clothing and furnishings, making the exhibit as visually captivating as it is informative.

The museum also offers hands-on workshops (reservation and fee required) where visitors can create their own original perfume or scented sachets—perfect for a memorable travel experience. In addition, the facility includes a herb garden with seasonal blooms where you can enjoy a natural hot spring footbath infused with herbal aromas, as well as a café and gift shop.
