Held over three days from November 2 to 4, Karatsu Kunchi is the grand autumn festival of Karatsu Shrine in Saga Prefecture. With roots tracing back to the Edo period, this centuries-old celebration is officially recognized as both a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset under the title “Hikiyama Events of Karatsu Kunchi.”
Fourteen magnificent and elaborately decorated hikiyama floats parade through the former castle town, accompanied by flutes, taiko drums, and energetic chants of “Enya, Enya” and “Yoisa, Yoisa.”
Make it to the event during Yoi-yama (Evening Parade) on November 2 to find massive floats illuminated by lantern light, creating a magical, otherworldly atmosphere. On November 3, the “Otabisho Shinko” sacred procession, brings a chance to see the floats make their way across the sandy beach of Nishi-no-Hama, slowly advancing as they sink into the sand—a breathtaking and unforgettable sight.
Each float is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, constructed using dry lacquer techniques and considered among the largest lacquered artworks in the world. Be sure to admire the detailed artistry up close.
Also not to be missed is the festival’s traditional music, recognized as one of the “100 Soundscapes of Japan Worth Preserving.”
