Nunose Shrine
Its popular "love fortune slips" feature striking messages.
Located near the center of Osaka Prefecture in Matsubara City, known as the "belly button of Osaka," this shrine has an unknown founding date. The shrine name is said to come from welcoming Haya Susanoo no Mikoto, a deity said to have been on Amamigaoka, by spreading out white cloth. Three deities are enshrined here: Haya Susanoo no Mikoto, Yae Kotoshironushi no Mikoto, and Takemikazuchio no Mikoto. The shrine is said to offer blessings for recovery from illness, protection from poisonous insects, warding off evil, business prosperity, and more.
In recent years, the shrine's "love fortune slips," created in collaboration with contemporary artist Hiroko Ichihara, have drawn attention. Rather than predicting good or bad luck, they feature striking messages in all 36 variations, including one that says "I want to get married" over six lines. Charms embroidered with unique phrases such as "Revival LOVE" are also popular, drawing many worshippers hoping for success in love.
The shrine is also home to valuable cultural properties, including the main hall, designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Osaka Prefecture, a mural of Chinese lions said to be by Kano Tan'yu, and the "Nunose Hakkei Hengaku," designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Matsubara City.
