Noboribetsu Cherry Blossom Avenue

Noboribetsu Cherry Blossom Avenue is an approx. 8 km stretch along Hokkaido Prefectural Route 2, leading from JR Noboribetsu Station to Noboribetsu Onsen, one of Japan’s top hot spring resorts. In early May each year, the Ezo-yamazakura bloom all at once—so spectacular it’s known as a “tunnel of flowers.” It’s great to view from a bus or car window, but we also recommend taking a walk along the sidewalk and enjoying cherry blossom viewing at a slower pace.

Unlike the pale, nearly white pink Somei-yoshino that are common across Japan, Ezo-yamazakura are known for their deep pink petals. Because reddish leaf buds open at the same time as the blossoms, the combination of flowers and leaves makes the whole tree look red. Also, as a wild variety, Ezo-yamazakura have petals with their own unique character, so blossoms with uneven sizes and colors are part of the appeal. Enjoy a wild, Hokkaido-style cherry blossom experience that feels a little different from Honshu.
