Ine Bay Sightseeing Boat
A sightseeing boat where you can enjoy the view of rows of funaya (boat houses) from the sea.
This activity is located in the northern part of Kyoto on the Tango Peninsula, the boat takes about 25 minutes to cruise around Ine Bay. The bay is lined with funaya houses along the shore, offering a beautiful, quintessential Japanese landscape you can see from water.
Funaya are unique traditional buildings with a boat garage on the first floor, directly connected to the sea, and a residential space on the second floor. The townscape, featuring funaya built from the late Edo period to the early Showa era, has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
One of the highlights you can see shortly after departure is Aoshima, an uninhabited island in Ine Bay. It is known as the “Island where the Gods dwell,” where it naturally acts as a breakwater, keeping the waters calm. The condition is said to have nurtured the funaya culture.
Another highlight is feeding the seagulls, a unique experience on the Ine Bay sightseeing boat. If you purchase some feed and hold it up above your head, the seagulls will skillfully snatch it mid-flight.
