Sendai Domain Shiraoi Motojinya Museum

A historical museum that preserves the memory of the Sendai Domain's northern defense efforts.

Last update :

A historical museum built within the designated site of the historic Shiraoi Sendai Domain Jinya Ruins. The ruins date back to the late Edo period, when the Sendai Domain was ordered to defend Ezo, with the Shiraoi Motojinya serving as the core and branch jinya built throughout the defense area.

In addition to remains such as earthworks and moats, the jinya site also features a full-scale gate display and the graves of domain samurai, preserving the atmosphere of the time. The museum displays Approx. 300 items related to the Shiraoi Motojinya, including maps, documents, and armor, offering visitors a detailed look at the history of the Sendai Domain's northern defense in the closing days of the Edo period.

The museum regularly hosts exhibitions and lectures, and exhibit tours by the volunteer guides of the Sendai Domain Shiraoi Motojinya Museum Friends Society are also popular (guides are available free of charge and without reservation on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays from April to November; paid guides by reservation are also available for groups and others).
In October 2022, the historic site and museum were selected as a Hokkaido Heritage site under the name "Sendai Domain Shiraoi Motojinya."
