Ikema Bridge

A stunning bridge where you can fully experience the mesmerizing gradation of blue known as “Ikema Blue.”

Last update :

The Ikema Bridge, completed in February 1992 at a total cost of around 10 billion yen, stretches 1,425 meters to connect the small 10-kilometer-wide Ikema Island with Miyako Island. From atop the bridge, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the vast ocean.

The true charm of Ikema Bridge lies in the breathtaking beauty of “Ikema Blue.”
This term refers to the mesmerizing gradation of multiple shades of blue seen in the surrounding sea. Due to the area’s unique underwater topography - where shallow and deep waters intermingle - the shallows take on a cobalt blue hue, while the deeper areas shimmer in emerald green. The resulting blend of blues creates the stunning “Ikema Blue,” renowned as one of the most beautiful sights in all of Miyako Island.

The colors are especially vivid during times when the difference between high and low tide is greatest, as the shallower water enhances the gradation even more. Since it is a public roadway, drivers should avoid distracted driving, but those who wish to fully appreciate the scenery can park nearby and cross the bridge on foot or by bicycle.
