Uriwari Falls

A waterfall known for its refreshingly cold, great-tasting spring water-selected as one of the 100 Exquisite Waters of Japan.

Last update :

Uriwari Falls sits deep within the grounds of Tentokuji Temple, a Koyasan Shingon Buddhist temple said to have been founded by Taicho Daishi. In 1985, its water was selected by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment as one of the 100 Exquisite Waters of Japan. With a daily flow of 4,500 tons and a water temperature of 54°F (12°C), the water is so cold that, according to legend, it once split a melon—giving the falls its name.

Pure spring water gushes steadily from between the rocks. Layer upon layer of strata acts as a natural filter, producing water that’s rich in highly pure minerals. There is a water-collection spot in the park parking lot, and many people come here for the water; it is also sold as bottled mineral water.

In the water, a red algae called benimadara—said to grow only here—thrives, making the stones under the surface look red. Every August, the “Wakasa Uriwari Meisui Festival” is held, with various events that celebrate the famous water, such as an outdoor tea ceremony and flowing somen noodles.
