A Delicious Katsudon for 650 Yen at Hozenji Yokocho “Katsudon” in Osaka

Despite being in the Minami shopping district of Osaka, Hozenji Yokocho is a quiet, atmospheric area with cobbled stone streets.
Yokocho is an 80-meter-long and 3-meter-wide street that’s full of well-known gourmet restaurants.
Today I visited “Katsudon,” a restaurant that, as its name suggests, specializes in katsudon (pork cutlet bowls).

There are usually always customers waiting their turn lined up outside of the restaurant, but for some reason today there was no line.
However, even if there is a line, the turnover rate is pretty quick, so you won’t be waiting long for a seat.

In addition to standard katsudon, they also have other dishes that use tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), like kare-katsu donburi and tonkatsu set meals.
All of the options are around 700 yen. That’s a great price!

Inside of the restaurant is a small, narrow space with only around 10 counter seats.
You pay when you order.

A Version of Katsudon with the Katsu and Rice Separated

One of the unique things about this restaurant is how they serve the topping and the rice separately.
You can choose to eat them separately or top the rice with the katsu.
However, it’s easy to make a mess if you try to top the rice right away, so I don’t recommend that.

The rice is cooked to a perfectly fluffy finish and is delicious!

The katsu had soaked up plenty of the slightly-sweetened broth. The seafood broth was seasoned beautifully!
The katsu is fried as each order comes in, so parts of it are still nice and crispy; yum!

I love this kind of old-fashioned sour umeboshi!

House-Made Furikake

This furikake is made with the same fish used in the broth ground up.

The furikake is delicious too, and I could probably eat all of the rice with just this!

After I’d finished about half of it, I put the rest of my katsu on the rice.
There was plenty of broth in the toppings, so it was a bit soupy. The rice then soaked up that broth, making it even more delicious!

I definitely recommend eating here if you want a tasty meal quickly and for cheap.
